New editor has her travelin shoes ready,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
There's only one way the new Travel editor can answer that: I wear completely different shoes! Right now I'm typing away in black patent leather Beatle boots. (Square toe, low chunky heel, just like the ones the Fab Four wore - and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in case you're wondering, Paul was my favorite.) These boots were made for walking, even through the doors of many-starred restaurants. I like to wear them on the plane in the winter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if only to save space in my luggage for more shoes.
And there is always more than one pair of shoes in my luggage. Indeed, when John's "Going Light" article appeared last July 20 to tell readers how to pack in a single carry-on, I mustered a bit of outrage. "You should have gotten a woman's point of view," I declared. "She would never have suggested taking just one pair of shoes everywhere." My best friend, Debbie, visiting that week from my hometown of Baltimore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], told John she could get around just fine with only her Keen sandals, with or without socks. But Debbie still brought along a second pair of shoes. (Ladies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are you with me on this?)
There was nothing wrong with John's choice of shoes, light hikers from Merrell. I wore Merrells when I hiked in and out of the Grand Canyon - one of only two sights in the world that brought me to tears at first glimpse ($144 for anyone who can guess awe-inducing spot No. 2, which will be revealed in a story later this year). To see the other, I wore the flat black suede numbers with the elastic strap.
Black flats seem so sensible to me, yet on my last vacation they took me on a tumble down three steps I never saw at an eco-friendly resort that kept the night lights low so as not to disorient breeding sea turtles guided by the moon. I sprained my ankle so badly it hurt for months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet I still enjoyed the next 12 nights of my vacation. I'll rent clubs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], borrow gloves, buy golf balls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go hatless - but the shoes, they've got to be sturdy enough and comfy enough to go the whole 19 holes. (And yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we will have a Golf Destinations edition later this year.)
Another reason I cannot travel with only one pair of shoes: The temptation to sample the best restaurant in town demands a pair of heels. I love urban travel, especially in American cities that so many Chronicle readers visit for business but rarely for vacation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I marvel at how like and unlike San Francisco the best of the rest are, particularly when it comes to the cuisine. (Look for some passport-free destinations this year, with a twist for our travel-savvy readers.)
And of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one must always have sneakers. I learned this when I covered the Masters golf championship in Augusta, Ga. The course was much hillier than it appears on TV, and before the Saturday tee times my blisters forced me to go shopping for something I had at home but hadn't packed.
While I may not wear the same shoes as John (or , or ), I do solemnly swear that the Travel section will continue to reach out to the one-pair packers while nodding to the Manolo packers, the spa-slipper packers, the Top-Sider packers and as varied a shoe-packing readership as we can reach.
The popularity of our "Just Back From" feature demonstrates that Chronicle readers aren't letting grass grow under their shoes; they take their travel seriously, and also like to share. So let's start our relationship with a shoe exchange. I've shown you mine, you show me yours. There's no arguing that the right shoes are essential tools of tourism and travel - maybe your days of hoofing it have given you a shoe story or two.
Maybe you tossed a pair off the cruise ship because you couldn't boogie in them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or are still wondering what happened to the shoes you left outside the room in Kyoto. Do you have a pair you wear only for travel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], never at home? One pair you think replaces all of mine? A pair that reminds you of a travel disaster? A pair that represents a guilty travel pleasure? A pair that is so worn, you wish you'd bought three? And,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially the ladies, if you could take only two pairs of shoes with you on the two-week vacation of your dreams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what would you take with you (and where)?
Our section will have a new look in a few weeks; in the meantime, settle in and enjoy Spud Hilton's take on the 2009 cruise world - our onboard expert tells me there are some great deals afloat.
