Canes players show support for union
On the day when preseason training camp was to open, the Canes players skating today at Raleigh Center Ice had a different look.

A major point of contention in the CBA talks has been pre-existing contracts. The union supports the league honoring the contracts that are in place and has opposed any salary reduction.
Staal has a year remaining on a contract signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and signed a 10-year contact extension with the Canes worth $60 million.
"It tough, especially with this summer and players signing 10-year deals and long-term contracts," he said. They make valid points that they accepted offers and contracts in good faith the league now wants to change. The major owners with deep pockets and their own GM circumventing the last CBA they forced down the players throats started these absurd long term contracts and high dollar amounts for middling players. The owners should honor the choices they made, not ask the players to correct tehir mistakes.
SImilarly the players who bear no risk in downturns or increased expenses have to realize the owners need some income and the players getting over 50% is out of whack, and that have to come down. Our guys seem to understand that, and are willing to take that as long as it doesn affect current contracts--so it would have to occur over time--and the sooner the better or the league suffers more.
It seems both sides though want the other to give in so they can claim victory. Compromise doesn appear to interest either side right now. So like you I losing optimism. Because nether side will win in this, neither will get even half of what their last proposals were. Until both sides are ready to actually give in each other direction the NHL is toast. There has to be a common ground where a deal can be made. I am increasingly losing my optimistic that the season can be salvaged. I don see either side moving toward serious problem solving. I continue to read and hear each side digging in and repeating the same arguments. As a fan, it is beyond frustrating.
Things can change quickly of course; but as of now the likelihood of any NHL hockey being played this season is rapidly becoming more and more remote. A lost season is the last thing on the planet the Hurricanes organization needs. Neither do either the NHL or the NHLPA benefit from an all out, bitter labor war.
