Forget about SpongeBob causing memory loss Knoxville News Sentinel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
If anyone out there wants to make a catalog of my faults - a big job and you may want to enlist my wife to help, as she is very knowledgeable on the subject - please be fair and include some of my good points.
For example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you think that I write drivel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], please note that it is entirely original drivel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not drivel plagiarized from anyone else. Also,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it surely counts to my credit that in all my life I have never watched a single episode of the TV cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants."
That Nickelodeon show stands accused of causing short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-old children - this in a study published online in the journal Pediatrics. For parents, doomed by biological instinct to perpetual worry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is another thing to worry about.
As reported by The Associated Press,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dimitri Christakis, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said parents need to realize that fast-paced programming may not be appropriate for very young children. "What kids watch matters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's not just how much they watch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Dr. Christakis said.
The study could be faulted because of its small size - only 60 children took part - and a Nickelodeon spokesman pointed out that "SpongeBob SquarePants" is aimed at children ages 6-11, not 4-year-olds.
No doubt these cautions will be a comfort to concerned parents whose typical reaction might be summarized thusly: "Our little darling is ruined,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! RUINED! There goes her chance of getting into a prestigious kindergarten,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Woe is us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! How can she do decent finger painting after being exposed to Public Sponge Enemy No,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. 1?"
Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is probably a mistake to despair. I may not know anything about cartoon sponges, but I am a parent and my children grew up happily without committing major felonies. It is a fair guess that they, too, were exposed at an early age to the SpongeBobs of their day.
Was it helpful to their early development that they saw on TV a patriarchal society of little blue people? Perhaps not,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the kids turned out Smurfly.
But I do think that there is something to be said for TV programming that is paced slowly for the littlest children. That was the secret of Pittsburgh's own Mister Rogers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was so soothing in tone and manner that canaries kept too close to the TV would fall off their perches snoring. Even to this day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], generations of adults get in the mood for naps by taking off their sneakers.
While this "SpongeBob" alarm should not be completely discounted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it should be noted that scientific studies often send confusing signals - milk is good for you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no it isn't,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc.
I am also old enough to remember what the experts said in the 1950s about comic books. They would destroy the creative powers of children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crippling their powers to read and write. I just wish I had read more of my favorite Donald Duck comic books. Why,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just think of the superior drivel I could write.
As for cartoons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a wonder my generation survived,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what with the fast-paced adventures of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of course, Bugs Bunny, that wascally wabbit. But we did survive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so what's up with that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doc?
And how about the Three Stooges, a trio of live cartoon characters whose violent animation was entirely their own? I saw them as an impressionable kid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and did I then go through life saying "nyuck, nyuck,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nyuck" while hitting someone on the noggin? Only when provoked.
A colleague of mine who is the mom of young children tells me that "SpongeBob" is amusing for children and adults both. That comes as no surprise. The very title is amusing and, further,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is set in an underwater world in a place humorously called Bikini Bottom.
That has me wondering whether "SpongeBob" has some redeeming features,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at least for the sophisticated 6-to-11 set. As much as short attention spans are a national problem - now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where was I? - a greater curse is to grow up without a sense of humor. (Those so cursed often end up writing to me, and I am obliged to go "nyuck,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nyuck,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nyuck" in response.)
