I'll get to the second part of that question shortly, but firstlet me tell you a bit about Google. If you've spent any time atall on the Web, you know that Google.com is a powerful andpopular Internet search engine. The company responsible for thatsite is also known as Google, and it is growing rapidly. Googleemployed fewer than 700 people two years ago; today there arenearly 2,700 Google employees. Such rapid growth required aninnovative yet efficient approach for finding qualifiedengineers to program the Google search engine; Google rose tothe challenge.
In an economy that has not been kind to many technical [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] workers, word of available jobs at a young and growing company likeGoogle brings swarms of people from all over the country andbeyond. How can [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] any company sift through so many applicationsand resumes in order to find the right people in a reasonableamount of time? The traditional resume-then-interview sequencewould take far too long.
The following is an excerpt from "Thriving in the 21st Century:Preparing Our Children for the New Economic Reality," due out in2006 from Cardamom Publishers
The powers that be at Google came up with a system that breaksfree of traditional hiring practices and brings the right peopleto their doorstep quickly and easily. It includes placingaptitude tests in "geek" magazines including "Physics Today" and"Mensa," resulting in a flood of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] answers sent in by candidates.
As we rejoin the global economy, where Americans are faced withcompetitors in [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] other countries who will work for far less moneythan we will, we must become innovators in order to survive.Workers in other countries may end up making the things we [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] usedto make, but they will still look to us when determining what [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] tomake, as [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] long as we continue to set the trends by coming up withnew products and ideas. Our country's economic future depends onour children's ability to be creative, to come up with new ideasand implement them. By homeschooling them, we equip them tobring about a prosperous future.
That freedom is a must for anyone who would innovate. Masterinnovator Thomas Edison, with his 1,093 patents (and inventionstoo numerous to list) spent much of his youth learning on hisown. According to Blaine McCormick, author of "At Work withThomas Edison," the inventor "....deplored formal education. Hebelieved it ruined your ability to think. To Edison, the ABC'sof education stood for "Avoid Being Creative." "
Everything! The "let's try something different" mindsetthriving at Google is also at home in the home. Homeschooledkids learn to think for themselves while learning about whatinterests them, instead of being [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] told what to do along with 25or 30 (or more) others who are assigned to do the exact samething in the exact same way. Homeschoolers don't spend theiryouth held captive in [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] one building all day, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] being encouraged to"fit in" and "go along to get along." They have the time and thefreedom to try things, to succeed or fail, and to try somethingelse.
How does Google find employees, and what does that have to dowith homeschoolers?
Google also buys space on billboards in Silicon Valley, postingon them only the phrase "(first 10-digit prime found inconsecutive digits of e).com", with no mention of the companyitself. Whoever figures out the answer ends up at a site with apuzzle on it. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Those who successfully solve the puzzle are thensent to a site where Google accepts resumes. Puzzles andchallenges like these are irresistible to the brainiacs that aredesired by Google, and they respond even if they didn't intendto look for a new job. Google uses these tactics to attract thequality applicants needed for its continued success. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] The beautyof this system is that Google has broken free of traditionalhiring practices in order to construct a system that bringsqualified potential employees to its doors efficiently and in areasonable amount of time. So what does this have to do withhomeschooling?
