Shoppers heed the call of distant malls
Shopping, according to apparently reputable surveys, is the No. 1 activity for travelers. This comes as a surprise to me. Based on what's on the Travel Channel 90 percent of the time, I would have thought it was watching guys with sunglasses and scraggly beards play Texas Hold 'Em.
But I digress. Maybe it's my Y chromosome speaking, cheap nike soccer cleats mercurial Discount Soccer Cleats Clearance Cleats, but there are things about shopping I will never understand. Here's an example: In one Travel Industry Association of America survey, reported in this space a couple of months ago, 70 percent of travelers said they prefer to shop in stores that are "unique and different" from the ones back home. Sounds reasonable,Duvetica Piumini italy, but think about it for a moment: It means the other 30 percent travel thousands of miles to buy the exact same stuff that's in their local mall. So why purchase stuff on vacation and schlep it all the way home if it's available for the same price at the nearest Galleria? My guess is that it's because travel fills us with a giddy effervescence that temporarily numbs the portion of our brains responsible for sales resistance. The very same capri pants that seem so unnecessary in the mall back home are suddenly irresistible when you've got a gelato in your hand and the Tuscan sun on your shoulders.
Nor do I understand the ruckus over knock-offs. In Venice, not far from Piazza San Marco, there's a street of glittering shops devoted to fancy-chic handbags and shoes: Gucci, Prada, Versace and the whole gang. And in front of each shop,Buy duvetica jackets online duvetica down jackets men sale uk outlet, Senegalese men display counterfeit versions of the very same items for sale in the stores. You can ogle a thousand-dollar purse in the window of the Gucci shop,http://duveticadownjacketssale.webmium.com/, and, a few feet away, you can buy a convincing copy for $25.
"Doesn't that hurt your business?" I asked a Gucci salesman.
"Our customers," he said with a shrug,http://peutereyparkaonlineshopwomen.olimx.com/, "they are not the same people."
He's right, I think. There's a tiny demographic willing to spend more on a handbag than a lot of folks spend on their cars, and these people don't as a rule buy cheap knock-offs. Likewise, it's hard to imagine the sort of person in the market for a $25 counterfeit Gucci suddenly deciding instead to upgrade -- at 40 times the price -- to the real thing.
There's only one shirt with a Calvin Klein label hanging in my closet, and it's a fake I bought for $3 in Bangkok nearly 20 years ago. The label's on the inside of the collar,http://monclerjassenherenoutletnederland.olimx.com/, so no one ever sees it but me. And it's a style -- a chambray work shirt -- I'm pretty sure Calvin Klein has never sold. But here's the thing: It's a great shirt. It fits well, and it's outlasted every other shirt I've ever owned. Do I feel I'm defrauding Mr. Klein by owning it? Not hardly.
I understand that the counterfeiting of software, music CDs and movie DVDs is a serious problem,Duvetica Piumini, and I'd never knowingly buy any of these. Any time a knock-off is sold as the real thing,http://billigtmonclerdunjackastockholmrea.olimx.com/, it's bad. But it's hard for me to get worked up over the $10 "Rolex" watches or the $5 "LaCoste" polo shirts being sold on the streets of Beijing or Zagreb. I can't imagine anyone thinks he's purchasing the genuine article. Besides -- and this will make the trademark lawyers happy -- the little alligator logo will probably fall off the first time in the wash.
We all have our guilty shopping pleasures, and mine,Duvetica Sale, as longtime readers know, is browsing the SkyMall catalog. For my money,http://parajumpersonsalestores.blogspot.com/, it's still the best time- killer you'll ever find in your airline seat-back. The catalog -- no,DUVETICA Piumini Italy Vendita, not the one with the duty-free Hermes scarves and Dunhill cigarettes, the one behind it -- is chockablock with items so breathtakingly impractical they can make sense only in an airline cabin pressurized, as most are, with 25 percent less oxygen than at sea level: Items like the ($89.95), the cigar cutter in the shape of a miniature French guillotine ($97.50) and the , perfect for storing CDs ($969, plus $95 shipping). Oh, and nose-hair trimmers. Lots of nose-hair trimmers.
Sadly, though, I've noticed that some of the zest has lately gone out of SkyMall. There seems to be fewer of the gloriously bizarre items and more things that are, well, duvetica jackets canada, sort of useful. What fun is that?
But the other day I spotted a product that gave me hope: The from ($49.95). It is,デュベティカアウトレット, simply, a regulation golf putter with a fishing reel attached. Not just any fishing reel: "In a Hammacher Schlemmer exclusive design," reads the blurb, "the reel on our putter has an all-metal housing." That ought to clinch the deal.
The idea, apparently,http://monclerjackenoutletch.albirank.net/, is that you can hit a putt, and, peuterey parka online shop women peuterey jacken herren outlet, after you invariably miss, you can reel your ball in as if it were a big-mouth bass. Aside from the fact that a golf ball attached to 10-pound test line absolutely won't roll straight (despite what the catalog says), it seems the product's only practical use might be in fishing for the rest of your clubs after you've chucked them into the water hazard.
