Employment niches remain in waning fields
EDMONTON -- Cobblery gives mind elves in curly-toed slippers and funny hats, and for good reason -- the skill of shoemaking and repair is fading quickly into obscurity.
Rather than repair their footwear, most people find bargain shoes -- for example runners -- and replace them once they need replacing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Michael Wallace of Edmonton's Wallace Shoe Making. "There was previously a lot of people who do (shoe) repairs, but now many people throw them away and purchase new stuff."
Wallace, who learned the trade from his father in Jamaica,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has long known that the industry was declining. But we have spent for a cobbler in Edmonton when he found its way to Canada 13 years ago, he realized those in the trade were turning down work he could do.
"I make shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that's my specialty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I fix just about anything --things that individuals decide to try other areas and they turn down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they bring it to me and I repair it," he says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adding that he's repaired items as varied as suitcases and bicycle seat covers.
A waning industry doesn't invariably signal the end of the business or career, says Mary-Margaret Walker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who runs a Texas recruitment company specializing in gaming and entertainment. Using the right approach, you'll be able to carve out a niche in a field simultaneously others are jumping ship.
"It's definitely possible, but I think that falls towards the strongest," she says. "A individual who is either caught in inertia or digs their heels in isn't necessarily the individual who's likely to stay."
Surviving requires diversifying your talent and identifying clients who still need you. With enough savvy, 2-D artists -- whose skills aren't in high demand -- can keep working, provided that they source out appropriate clients and find ways to collaborate with their 3-D counterparts, for example.
Sign painter Theodore Hartman is proving this philosophy true. The 31-year-old is from a household of artists and learned the skill of sign painting from his father, who has since left the profession.
The advent of vinyl lettering in the 1990s was predicted to destroy the trade entirely, but Hartman finds a niche for himself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], alongside a dwindling quantity of master artisans twice his age.
"I've only had the opportunity to stay a sign painter or letterer because I supplement my income through faux-finishing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], gold-leafing, that are other artistic things that aren't in demand."
Along with diversifying his services, the Oakland, Calif., artist seeks clients by having an appreciation for quality craftsmanship. Irish pubs and businesses run by Mexican-Americans are usually good prospects, he admits that. Sign-painting is also appealing to high-end businesses searching for a classy method to draw focus on their services.
The interest in his sign-painting services diminishes yearly, but Hartman never doubts his capability to earn a living. "I come from an extremely unique family. My dad always said, 'Don't be worried about anything. As long as you're a good person and live a good life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the universe will take care of you.' "
