Do Rich People Live Longer
Those looking for a magic elixir to maintain them happy and healthy need take a look at their banking account. Wealth and, more broadly, socioeconomic status, play a strong role in determining just how long we live.
[See 50 Methods to Improve Your Finances in 2012.]
"It's clear those who have less wealth will have fewer years to live compared to those with increased wealth," says James Smith,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], senior economist at the research group RAND. The bond is so widely accepted that scientific study has trained with a reputation: "the wealth gradient in mortality." What's far more complicated to comprehend is the reason why the connection exists, and whether wealth causes better health, or vice versa.
The longest-running longitudinal study of health, run by George Vaillant, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], found education to be one of the greatest determinants of longevity, along with behavioral factors drinkers were more prone to die young, for example. From the 500-plus Harvard students and inner-city Boston men the study has followed since 1937,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Harvard students lived typically 10 years longer than the inner-city men, says Vaillant. Actually, 3 in 10 of the Harvard students lived to 90, compared to the 3 to 5 percent one would expect from that age bracket.
One of the inner-city men that attended college, health was just as good as that of Harvard students who attended college but not graduate school, says Vaillant. "[The Boston men] visited terrible colleges by Harvard standards, but they ended up getting 16 many years of education, and that absolutely evened the arena," says Vaillant. Individuals who go to college tend to drink less, smoke less, and therefore are less likely to be obese, he adds, all factors that contribute to longevity. Actually, after controlling for education along with other factors, Vaillant found that income alone had little impact on longevity.
Individuals who pursue advanced schooling, explains Vaillant, tend become more centered on the future, which probably also helps them make healthier choices. "In order to get instruction, particularly if you're poor, you need to think you've got a future," he admits that.
Indeed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Smith, one hypothesis is the fact that "more-educated individuals are more forward-looking, and when they create decisions, they look at the future a lot more than uneducated people. A lot of things you might do do not have an immediate negative impact drinking, smoking, and doing drugs can [feel good within the short-term] the fact is it will kill you in the future." Another possibility is the fact that people with higher amounts of education may maintain their health, have better use of healthcare, and follow doctors' directions when it comes to taking pills or any other instructions.
Smith's research also shows that causality doesn't just run one of the ways; health plays a role in wealth, too. "Because you're healthy and in a position to work, you are wealthier," he explains. At the same time, poor health normally takes a toll on the person's wealth, either since it prevents one from working or because of expensive medical treatments. Taken together, researchers in the University of Chicago estimate that the gains in everyday life expectancy between 1970 and 2000 resulted in one more $3.2 trillion a year in national wealth.
Meanwhile, as income disparities continue to grow in this country, so life span disparities. According an analysis by from the Social Security Administration, life expectancy for 65-year-old men within the top 1 / 2 of the income distribution has increased by 5 years, to 21.5 more years. For all those in the bottom 1 / 2 of the income distribution, life expectancy has increased just over one year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to 16.1 more years.
First,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the lack of worry. When you are able look at your bank balance and know you can easily cover your bills and expenses without doing without another thing. Second, when you are able afford good health care coverage for you and your family. Many of us cannot. Even those of us who share the risk within a company pay about 50% from the premium in addition to co-pays and sometimes large deductibles. Third, you really can afford better, more nutritious food,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rather than worrying about stretching a buck by feeding your loved ones junk or a lot of cheap starch. And,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], better nutrition means less cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, obesity which contributes to a longer, higher quality of life. Fourth, more money means more time for recreation to de-stress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to pursue hobbies and take vacations. Stress is a huge robber of peace of mind, health and vitality. Per week to some month of sleep,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cruising, or romping around on a beach beats intermittent periods of unemployment without any money coming in, with no ability to leave town even for a long weekend. Fifth, having money enables you to slide nicely into retirement, without having to be worried about working to your seventies and eighties because a large chunk of your retirement fund was stolen by Wall Street banksters. Its fine if you choose to work, but to have to work just to sustain life will definitely take a huge toll in your health insurance and longevity. Sixth, people with money tend to be better educated. Better educated people often drink and smoke less, and are not as likely to mood-alter with addictive drugs, thus resulting in a healthier lifestyle and long life expectancy. Seventh, wealthy people are generally subjected to less risk. They reside in a better section of town and therefore are much less likely to be victims of crime, have traffic accidents or perhaps be in an encounter with police.
