A designer lifestyle
Despite our extraordinary prosperity over the last 10 years, there have been people you can guarantee will bitch concerning the poor state of the business. Farmers obviously -- they have ever been well-off enough? Taxi drivers, of course -- even their second homes in Alicante afford them no relief or joy -- and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], less recognized for their bitching but always at it nonetheless, those who work in the fashion industry.
The farmers and taxi drivers will always be around but in fairness to fashion designers and manufacturers they have a reason; despite all the money washing around the place, it was not too easy for most of them to get your hands on it. The reasons are obvious -- the British fashion chains as well as their cheap-designer rip offs, the high vat on clothes, our prime labour costs and so forth.
All totally valid but, nonetheless, whining isn't attractive. So how refreshing to meet a rag trader that has nothing but positive things to say, who says Irish fashion is fun, fantastic and fabulous.
"There was a negativity towards Irish fashion, however it has come on in leaps and bounds. It happened with film, music, sport and now it's happening with fashion. And, just like the the areas, you don't buy it because it's Irish,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you buy it since it is good," says the glamorous Deborah Veale -- a stalwart from the Irish fashion scene and one from the designers chosen to stage a show in the forthcoming Motorola Dublin Fashion Week.
Deborah procedes to say, "It is difficult to get started and you get a large amount of individuals who fall on the sword, often because of ego,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is possible to build an invaluable label within this fantastic country that we live in."
Deborah comes with a weapon in her arsenal not one other designer can boast -- a marketing genius who also happens to be her husband. Though they now work together in the commercial, the place she and affable Corkman Charlie Hanrahan met couldn't be further removed from fashion.
"We linked up in a rugby match,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Deborah says and only establishes which after a little ruminating over the details and lastly getting confirmation from Charlie, that has a better memory for the romantic minutiae of the courtship. "It was 1991,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ireland versus Australia on the planet Cup," she laughs.
Deborah had been in the fashion business before that fateful meeting, though in those days working for others. Originally from Avoca in Co Wicklow, she studied fashion at NCAD, then spent some years in various companies "getting the edges knocked off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," and it wasn't until she started to live with Charlie that she started her very own business. It gradually took off but however the label is becoming much more successful since he joined her.
Once they first met, Deborah was based in Dublin together with her daughter Sorcha (from her first marriage), then 10 years ago she gone to live in Cork to get along with Charlie, who had been employed by Heineken. It was then she chose to put her toe within the water and hang up her own label.
Deborah adored Cork but thought it was a logistical nightmare, specially when she -- like many fashion designers -- started to get her manufacturing done outside Ireland and the travelling became really difficult, particularly that extra leg from Dublin Airport to Cork. So, 4 years ago, they upped sticks and moved to Dublin.
Charlie joined Deborah in the commercial then, spread his marketing magic, and it's been developing exponentially since.
Most women knows Deborah's style of design -- her signature is extremely fluid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], very feminine with serious bling in her cocktail wear. But as Charlie convinced her,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she's capable of any look and today has a significant corporate wear side to the label and the third arm of her clients are a newly developed accessories range, including shoes, boots and bags.
"Women and bags,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Deborah sighs happily, adding "we just love them".
Furthermore Deborah and Charlie now work together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the business is based in their home. However they do have strategies for coping with being constantly at such close quarters.
"We have great respect for every other's areas and each major decision is joint," says Deborah. "I design and he runs the company. In the beginning, I attempted not to talk about work but it fails if something is in your thoughts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], therefore if something is really worrying one of us we talk and so the worry naturally subsides".
Additionally they find long uses the beach with their dog Fudge -- they survive Belgrave Square, Monkstown, just moments from Seapoint -- very therapeutic.
Lucky, too, that their is made of a large rambling Victorian house, with lots of room to escape one another if required. The floor floor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], using its two, interconnecting reception rooms, is mostly devoted to work; the rear room can be used for all the office work and also the front room is done out being an elegant show room.
The only real living room on that floor is the cosy kitchen, that is decorated in buttercream and black. A a little colour is provided by the orange Art Deco set of china.
"I love the iridescent shine of the china, it was in my grandmother's house and it was among the first things that made me aware of colour. I was thrilled when she left it to me, probably because I was eyeing up constantly," Deborah laughs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adding that it's one of the things she loves about the kitchen. Another is the way it opens out on to some dinky deck, overlooking the sprawling garden where she will often be found having a relaxing cup of coffee.
The fabulous upstairs family room is how the actual relaxing is done, however. It has a huge bay window in addition to a large sash window and extremely high ceilings therefore it is an extremely bright, airy room but it is also welcoming -- the clotted-cream walls add warmth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just like the polished oak floors. The brown velvet sofa and matching armchair from Meadows and Byrne lend a classy cosiness. The black dining room table and cream chairs will also be from Meadows and Byrne.
"I'm a great fan of theirs," says Deborah. "I think they are doing really nice design and quality."
Pictures -- there is a particularly nice painting by Carmel Mooney -- lamps and photos then add colour, but Deborah would rather keep your room quite spare. "We operate in such a cluttered environment that I prefer simplicity in my home surroundings. Colour, too, I prefer to keep for fashion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the bubbly designer says, adding, yet again, "it's this kind of exciting business, I truly love it."
If they are all like Deborah at the Motorola Dublin Fashion Week, the enthusiasm alone could alter their success levels dramatically .
That simply leaves the farmers and the taxi drivers. Can anything prompt an identical sea change?
Deborah Veale's fashion show (with fellow designer Aideen bodkin) will be held on the top floor of Fallon Byrne, 11-17 Exchequer St, d2, on august 28 at 5.30pm.相关的主题文章:
