College Gameday Chris Fowler talks about TCU Pro Combat Uniforms and BYU
Following the event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he took time to speak with TCU Horned Frogs Examiner Stephen Francis about everything from TCU's uniforms to the Fort Worth atmosphere and even BYU's decision to go independent. Here's the transcript of that interview in it's entirety.
Stephen Francis: You guys were in town last year for the unveiling of TCU's (Pro Combat) uniform against Utah. Looking back at that, can you talk to me about how big of a deal that was?
Chris Fowler: Well the whole visit was a big deal for us. It was flattering that it was a big deal for the campus as well. It was one of our favorite stops on the tour, and I'm not just saying that because you're from TCU. I mean,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we like going to these places. The setting for us was awesome; an academic setting with those new buildings. The welcome was incredible on Friday; even more amazing on Saturday. The build-up for the game was great and obviously TCU as a team did it's part that night. But yeah, they set up on the stage the unveiling of the unis and the fact that they were so unique and had so much flavor and color with the tradition and the tie to the horned frogs with the spitting blood and the horned frog scales and all that kind of stuff was cool. I mean, usually when you do something that's kind of revolutionary, you know . . . it's hard to get a consensus that it's cool. Not everybody likes it because it's "edgy." But all four of us on the set were pretty blown away by it and it was cool to see them and I knew it would be the hardest act to top with this year's unis because the bar was set pretty high. But I like that they kept with some of the cool aspects of last year's uni and also put on a new twist on the pants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because they're pretty "out there." But they're pretty cool.
SF: Well, you led into my next point. I was going to ask you how you would compare last year's to this year's and what do you think of the differences?
Fowler: Well I learned last year that Horned Frogs spit blood when they attack. I wasn't aware of that little fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I think the fact that it's on the helmet is cool. I think that keeping what works is always a smart thing when you design anything and they kept a lot of what worked last year; the purple, the grey, and the black is a really good color scheme. I think the 'scale' pants is absolutely unique. Nobody else has those pants. And then the blood spitting thing on the helmet is very, very cool. I think that what TCU did, which is stepping out there a little bit and making it edgy did raise the bar. There's two philospohies to these uniforms. Either you honor the tradition and you go back to some cool aspect of the past like what you see with the Ohio State uniforms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Oregon State uniforms and some of the others. Or you go out there on the edge and try to be state of the art. And that's what TCU has done becuase TCU has great tradition. You could have gone that way. But I think that the players kind of like that it's funky and different and new,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I think these ones are just as cool as last year's.
SF: I'm sure you don't know the full schedule yet, but any plans (for College Gameday) to come back out to Fort Worth this year?
Fowler: It's always up to the teams to do their part. I mean,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if BYU/TCU turns into a monster game and TCU's undefeated sitting there in the national title hunt and BYU's viewed as a competitive opponent we'll go to that game just like we did last year in Provo. And I think the game at Utah at the end of the year would also be a contender. But we don't know what Utah's going to do. I mean, you get it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if TCU wants to have Gameday on the campus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], frankly, root for BYU to beat Washington early on for BYU to have a great season because there's always two parts to the equation. You know, we have no hesitations to coming back to TCU for the atmosphere and the environment. I'd love to do another show right in the same spot. You know, we have a pretty simple motto: It's gotta be the biggest game that Saturday. That's why we were at two TCU games last year and if it is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we'll be there again.
SF: Any take on the BYU situation and their going independent?
Fowler: It's a tough thing for the schools in the conference. They're going,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're staying, they're going, right on the deadline. I can understand why TCU would be fired up to play BYU. And I'm not close enough to (BYU's) deal to evaluate the business aspects of going to that conference for one sport and then going to another conference for others. It's kind of funny I mean, you say 'Independent' but then I don't really get it. But,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I haven't studied it from their standpoint. I know that it will inspire (as I've) already heard from people (that) TCU will be fired up to play them with the way it went down and I imagine the rest of the Mountain West rivals will be fired up to get them one last time.
His take on the BYU situation just might be the most intriguing part of this interview. For those that know Fowler's he's usually the more "in between" guy on the set of Gameday as more of a host than an analyst. That's no knock on him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as he's quite honestly one of the best the network has to offer.
It was actually pretty refreshing to get his take on something that's been pretty controversial around the conference because between Fowler and his co-hosts Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit he usually defers the opinions to the wacky out-spoken older guy and the seasoned college football veteran. It will be even more interesting to hear what he, Corso and Herbstreit have to say during Saturday morning's program.
Fowler is the co-host of ESPN's College Gameday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], presented by Home Depot. The program will change format just a bit this year by starting on ESPN U at 8 AM CDT and then switching to ESPN at 9 AM CDT. Saturday's program will be the first on-location edition of the show and will air live from Atlanta,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Georgia for the game between #21 LSU and #16 North Carolina.
