After the breakdown of her relationship back in 2005, Kent mother Amanda Jeffery and her son Tom endured chaotic living conditions for a few years before they were saved by a Government affordable housing scheme.
Initially, Amanda had to move into her mother's one-bedroom bungalow, where she and her growing son struggled to find enough space to live. "To say it was a squeeze would be an understatement!" Amanda recalls. "I had a single bed in my mother's dining area and when Tom stayed with me, we [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] had to swap with my mother and share her double bed.
After 18 months of hard work, however, Amanda had finally saved up enough money to put down a deposit on a rented property in Bearsted near Maidstone - close to her son Tom's school friends, and his father. After living there for nearly two years, Amanda met Martin Thrift, and the two instantly hit [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] it off and soon decided they wanted to live together. They felt unable to buy a home of their own, so initially found another rented property in Sandling, near Maidstone, where they stayed for 18 months. Amanda then caught sight of an advertisement in a local paper for HomeBuy Direct - a Government purchase assistance scheme which has [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] now been superceded by FirstBuy - and realised it might be possible for them to own their own home after all.
Moat, the Government's HomeBuy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Agent for Kent, told Amanda about the Eden Village development from Ward Homes in Sittingbourne. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] She drove to the marketing suite and was shown the 'Coach House'.
"From the minute I saw it, I knew it was perfect," she says. When Amanda took Martin to see the 'Coach House' he felt the same, and the couple proceeded to purchase 70% of the property through HomeBuy Direct. They paid a deposit of £10,202 and received an equity loan to cover the remaining share, split evenly between the Government and Ward Homes, while retaining [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] 100% ownership of their home.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] "Just over three weeks after viewing the 'Coach House', we were given the keys to our new home; I could not believe how quickly it all happened!" says Amanda. "We are so grateful to have found HomeBuy Direct, as well as Moat, because it has given us a way of owning a home and really building a solid investment for the future."
She adds: "Just when I thought we had achieved everything that we possibly could and that life could get no better, Martin asked me to marry him! We cannot believe how lucky we have been to meet each other, buy our beautiful home and to cap off the fairy tale, get married too."
Amanda and Martin were married on 21 February 2011. Since they bought their home in Summer 2010, the HomeBuy Direct scheme has been replaced by FirstBuy, a new scheme which works in a similar way [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and is one of a suite of purchase assistance products available to potential purchasers of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] affordable new homes in Kent, and all over England and Wales.
