Lakers have hard day of work
was not taking anything for granted.
With Games 3 and 4 in Salt Lake City on Saturday and Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], respectively, Lakers Coach Phil Jackson got his team prepared for those games by having a a tough workout on Thursday.
The Lakers will practice again Friday in Los Angeles and then depart later that day for Utah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I always worry about the day off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Jackson said. "The day off is sometimes a disconnect and we just can be disconnected during the playoffs."
Even Lakers Center Andrew Bynum,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is playing with a torn cartilage in his right knee, did some of the conditioning drills.

More important than the respect Drew is getting on the blog is the respect he is getting from opposing offensive players, who've become increasingly hesitant to attack the paint whenever he is in the game. In the Lakers defensive scheme, Drew's ability to intimidate and force the other team to adjust their offense is just as important as his blocked and altered shots. It is how Drew anchors the defense.
This is what Phil Jackson is talking about when he says the Lakers are a different team when Drew is on the court. You can easily see the difference Drew makes by just watching what happens whenever Pau replaces him at center as opposing teams immediately attack the rim for easy layups and dunks. They know their best opportunity to penetrate and pick up points in the paint is when Drew is out.
That teams attack the rim when Pau plays is more out of respect for Drew than any disrespect for Pau. In fact, most of the blocks that Pau and Lamar get when they're in the game together come because the other team is constantly attacking the paint. What's missing is the intimidation factor that Drew provides, which sometimes results in too many easy points in the paint when he is not in the game.
I have to give Phil Jackson high praise for the job he has done developing Drew, especially mentally. I've always been impressed with Drew's intelligence, character,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and dedication. You don't come out of high school with little experience and fight back after 3 major injuries to become a premier player on the premier team in the NBA without having a lot of heart, desire, and perseverance. What Phil has brought out of Drew as we started these playoffs, however, is a newfound focus and maturity.
As for Drew being injury prone, the jury is still out. But while Drew has suffered major injuries in each of the last three seasons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it should also be pointed out that in each succeeding year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Drew has been able to recover more quickly, play more games, and make a bigger contribution in the playoffs. As a matter of fact, this year he actually played in the same number of games - 65 - as Pau Gasol.
It's ironic that there are still Lakers fans who want to trade Drew for Bosh or a top flight point guard. I've even heard some fans muse about possibly trading Pau instead, which I think is just as stupid as thinking of trading Drew. Same with Lamar as far as I am concerned. This trio of big men who can each average a double-double is exactly the mix of power and finesse we need to complement Kobe. The encouraging news is that all three of our bigs are finally starting to play great at the same time,
Drew is slowly blossoming into the player that most of us have hoped he would become, a potentially dominating force at both ends of the court. It's hard to remember that he is still only 22 years old and very inexperienced as far as number of games played, having only a year and a half of experience in high school before being drafted by the Lakers. they are HUGE suns fans! for years i always have to FAKE like i like them when the lakers aren playing. little do they know how i really feel. however, they been VERY kind to me in the laker lean years (life without shaq),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not to rub it in. i been very respectful to them also, since the lakers have owned their asses for the last three years (the gasol era). FEELING IT!
lakertom- no worries. I don think anybody has even threatened to take credit for anything i have said before, and I have always completely understood why. LOL
But thanks. I do feel that the comment of the day should at least be vaguely basketball related though.
and hey, i have many times (or at least a couple) said that i wasn concerned with the gender of anybody on the blog. I have also been trying to figure out an angle to do a song parody to as it is in my opinion one of the great rock songs of all time, but none of the Lakers players or personnel ever obliged. So i had to take the chance to do even a slight take on it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I had to go with it.
Apologies though, Justa, as I am resisting the urge to do a full song treatment. As much as I have always loved you (hey, I love everybody equally, just so more equally than others), I am sticking with Lakers as subjects at the moment. I still have too many players and too little time.
2009, 9:22PM About the only thing more popular than headbands these days in the NBA are mouth guards. But anyways
