Skoda Yeti family set to grow
VW must be in a quandary just now. Currently, the Skoda badge has better market appeal than VW's own,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they only have themselves to blame as it was VW who let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. Oh how the suits must be squirming at VAG headquarters.
So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what do they do? If they hamstring Skoda too much they will effectively be cutting into their own revenue stream. Maybe they could always spin Skoda off? VW aren't stupid and they must know that Skoda probably possess enough momentum now to take the fight fully to VAG's door should that happen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which leaves an option that would have seemed unbelievable ten years ago: Make Skoda the mainstream VAG brand.
This would mean a huge shakeup at VAG and the loss of at least one of the brands, and believe me when I say every mainstream VAG brand is in the frame here.
Personally ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], believe the decision should be to spin-off Audi, move the VW brand up-market (which has been happening by default anyhow), promote Skoda to the middle tier and leave Seat to do what they do best,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is to make fun and cheap small cars.
I've had a 2.0D yeti for just under a year now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it's great - fun to drive, handles well, practical, we've been on some long journeys - 6hr plus, and it retains it comfort all the way. Roofrack on top allow roofbox and bikes. I wouldn't swap it for anything but another Yeti. There's always going to be negative posters out there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who have nothing better to do with their lives. Some good interesting comments from sgtgrash, and i think everyone is right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 7 seater would be a good addition, not so sure about the smaller version, but Skoda have done everything right so far.
Did I mention i love my Yeti? Smile
VAG are starting to look a bit like BL (without the union strikes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].) in that they have several badge engineered marques overlapping and eating into each others market.
Skoda are no longer a joke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The only downside of owning the larger Skoda models are that you look like a taxi driver/minicabber/airport chauffeur,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
But that is testament to the quality. People like VAG tech at mainstream prices. VAG are starting to realise this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and are pegging back the tech. Skoda should have been their Dacia. Instead it is more of a "peoples car" than the VW marque!
They have positioned VW as the sub-premium marque, although their advertising recently has focused on the price of the base models (with all the goodies being optional).
Can't see them getting rid of Audi, as Audi are a cash cow. The higher ups in VAG have admitted themselves that they are overpriced, and with the huge numbers of sheep (certainly in UK/Ire) desperate to purchase what they perceive to be a premium marque,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to get one over on the neighbours, it is too lucrative to get rid of.
Seat would be the candiate for axing in my opinion. I've said it before and I'll say it again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they don't have a clue what to do with Seat. They started off building Fiat cars and vans under licence, VW took over and they were a budget marque, but now they tried to make them their Alfa Romeo, but the range is fairly uninspiring. Ibiza hatchback (a stiffly-sprung Polo), several sizes of a monobox hatchback (Toledo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Altea and the well-selling Leon), a badge engineed MPV Alhambra and a second hand Audi.
