Residents in Brighton East were woken through the sound of the low-flying helicopter about 7am yesterday. Little did they are fully aware they were witnessing police foil a potential attempt by two men to commit the city's 28th gangland murder since 1998.
They saw people in the special operations group close to the Brighton Cemetery on North Road apprehend the happy couple as part of simultaneous arrests across Melbourne.
Traffic along North Road was diverted as members of the SOG, armed with machine-guns, were joined by police and detectives investigating underworld killings.
One North Road resident, Shane, said he was woken by the helicopter as the SOG moved in across the road. "The helicopter. was right above our home actually (and then) doing circle deal with the cemetery. There was police everywhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he told 3AW.
Tony Fraser,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who lives opposite the cemetery, stood on his front lawn and watched through binoculars as police swooped. "All of a sudden there were police cars everywhere," he said. "The SOG bought two guys, they handcuffed both of them, one of them was lying prone about the footpath,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], another had his back to the street." Among the men was crying.
Among items seized by police were a pistol,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a mobile phone, a hat along with a running footwear. Police used crime scene tape in nearby Raymond Grove to seal off an earlier model Mazda and an apartment. The car was taken for examination.
The arrested men were taken to the St Kilda Road police complex. The very first arrived at 8am within an unmarked police car, sitting in the back with his eyes closed. Another arrived just over 2 hours later.

Seconds later an unmarked police car with window tinting followed with two men within the back seat.

She told reporters outside the complex she did not know where her husband was and hoped to find out from police,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I just came down to determine that which was going on," she said.
Three detectives dropped towards the foyer, where they confronted Mrs Williams. She lashed out at them, forcing them to grab her by the arm and escort her upstairs.
