Spartacus Blood and Sand Complete First Season DVD Review
Through the first third of the season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand it seemed like the more appropriate title may have been Spartacus: Blood and Boobs. There was so much gratuitous nudity and sex that Cinemax tried to become a PBS station. This was underscored by Xena Warrior Princess herself, Lucy Lawless, getting naked early and often and sending fanboys everywhere into a sweat and running for a cold shower.
But then along came episode five, Games setting the tone for the rest of the season and showing just how good the show could be. Based upon historical records,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at least in part,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Spartacus tells the story of a Thracian warrior (Andy Whitfield) who rebels against his Roman military commanders and as a punishment his wife is sold into slavery while he is condemned to die in the gladiatorial arena of Capua. When he kills four gladiators in the arena his sentence is commuted from death to slavery. He is purchased by Lentulus Batiatus (John Hannah) owner of a stable of gladiators and is given the name Spartacus after a legendary Thracian King.
The first few episodes find Spartacus beginning his training under Doctore (Peter Mensah), befriending fellow recruit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Varro (Jai Courtney), and clashing with Capua reigning champion, Crixus (Manu Bennett). Spartacus: Blood and Sand seemed to be tiptoeing through its first few episodes, trying to find its direction. It was overloading the sex and nudity to make up for threadbare plots. Then came with Games At a popular holiday event in Capua,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Batiatus rival Solonius conspires to kill Crixus and Spartacus by having them face the giant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], undefeated Celtic gladiator, Theokles. This episode was a pristine example of the back-stabbing intrigue that would be come the show staple. But more importantly, Spartacus prevails against Theokles while Crixus is nearly killed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thereby becoming Capua new champion. As champion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Spartacus used his status to bargain with Batiatus to have his wife located and returned to him.
Despite its over reliance on blood and titillation, Spartacus developed into a complex drama where every character had a scheme or two to further their own end. You need both hands and feet and a few of a friend to count up all the plots and intrigues introduced in the first season and yet remarkably they are tied neatly together.
As a testament to John Hannah outstanding performance, you find yourself rooting both for and against him. Does he generally care for Spartacus, or is he just using him to further his own status? Hannah masterfully walks the tightrope between blue collar Roman just trying to get ahead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a master manipulator who casts aside anyone who isn of value to him. He is both a narcissist and wildly insecure as shown when the Capuan Magistrate insults him by saying he should stick to training gladiators and forget aspiring to a career in politics. While Hannah is the standout Andy Whitfield, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Manu Bennett,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nick Tarabay (playing the crippled gladiator Ashur) all take their turns with superb performances.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand is filmed in the style of a graphic novel similar to Blood doesn flow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it cascades in slow motion spurts and droplets. Using more green screen filming than any other TV show and perhaps any other film,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Spartacus boasts scenery that is vibrant and dazzling and unlike any other show on television today. Also looks at how the story was expanded over history.
Spartacus: Battle Royale (7:25) This is a compilation of fights from the entire first season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Gladiator Boot Camp (4:20) See the actors go through a month long training regimen as they whip themselves into shape and learn to fight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Grime and Punishment (4:53) A hilarious featurette that looks at the scene where Spartacus and Varro are tossed into the cesspool as a punishment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Very funny!
