A designer lifestyle
Despite our extraordinary prosperity over the last 10 years, there have been people you are able to guarantee will bitch concerning the poor state of the business. Farmers of course -- have they ever been well-off enough? Taxi drivers, of course -- even their second homes in Alicante afford them no relief or joy -- and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], less known for their bitching but always at it nonetheless, those who work in the fashion industry.
The farmers and taxi drivers will always be with us but in fairness to fashion designers and manufacturers they have a reason; despite the money washing around the place, it was not too easy for many of them to obtain your hands on it. The reasons are obvious -- the British fashion chains as well as their cheap-designer rip offs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our prime vat on clothes, the high labour costs and so on.
All totally valid but, nonetheless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whining isn't attractive. Just how refreshing to meet a rag trader who has only positive items to say, who says Irish fashion is fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fantastic and fabulous.
"There would be a negativity towards Irish fashion, however it originates on in a lot. It happened with film,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], music, sport and now it's happening with fashion. And, similar to the the areas, you do not buy it since it is Irish, you buy it since it is good," says the glamorous Deborah Veale -- a stalwart of the Irish fashion scene and one from the designers chosen to stage a show in the forthcoming Motorola Dublin Fashion Week.
Deborah goes on to say, "It is hard to get started and also you get a lot of people who fall on the sword, often because of ego,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it's possible to construct a valuable label in this fantastic country that people live in."
Deborah comes with a weapon in her arsenal no other designer can boast -- an advertising and marketing genius who also is actually her husband. Though they now interact in the commercial, the area she and affable Corkman Charlie Hanrahan met couldn't be further removed from fashion.
"We linked up in a rugby match," Deborah says and only establishes which after a little ruminating within the details and finally getting confirmation from Charlie, that has a better memory for that romantic minutiae of their courtship. "It was 1991, Ireland versus Australia in the World Cup," she laughs.
Deborah have been in the fashion business before that fateful meeting, though in those days employed by others. Originally from Avoca in Co Wicklow, she studied fashion at NCAD,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then spent some years in different companies "getting the edges pushed off," also it wasn't until she began to accept Charlie that she started her very own business. It gradually became popular but but the label is becoming even more successful since he joined her.
When they first met, Deborah was based in Dublin with her daughter Sorcha (from her first marriage),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then Ten years ago she gone to live in Cork to be with Charlie, who had been working for Heineken. It was then she decided to put her toe within the water and set up her very own label.
Deborah adored Cork but found it a logistical nightmare, particularly when she -- like many fashion designers -- began to get her manufacturing done outside Ireland and also the travelling became really difficult, particularly that extra leg from Dublin Airport to Cork. So, 4 years ago, they upped sticks and moved back to Dublin.
Charlie joined Deborah in the business then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spread his marketing magic, and it is been developing exponentially ever since.
Nearly all women will know Deborah's type of design -- her signature is extremely fluid, very feminine with serious bling in her cocktail wear. But as Charlie convinced her, she's capable of any look and now has a significant corporate wear side towards the label and also the third arm of her clients are a newly developed accessories range, including shoes, boots and bags.
"Women and bags," Deborah sighs happily, adding "we really adore them".
Furthermore Deborah and Charlie now interact, the business relies in their home. However they will have techniques for coping with being constantly at such close quarters.
"We have great respect for each other's areas and each major decision is joint," says Deborah. "I design and that he runs the organization. At first, I attempted to not talk about work but it doesn't work if something is in your thoughts, therefore if something is really worrying among us we talk and so the worry naturally subsides".
Additionally they find long walks on the beach with their dog Fudge -- they survive Belgrave Square, Monkstown, just minutes from Seapoint -- very therapeutic.
Lucky, too, that their base is a large rambling Victorian house, with lots of room to get away from one another if required. The ground floor, using its two, interconnecting reception rooms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is mainly devoted to work; the back room can be used for the office work and the front room is done out being an elegant show room.
The only real living room on that floor may be the cosy kitchen, that is decorated in buttercream and black. A splash of colour is supplied by the orange Art Deco group of china.
"I love the iridescent shine of the china, it was during my grandmother's house also it was among the first stuff that made me conscious of colour. I had been thrilled when she left it in my experience, probably because I had been eyeing it up constantly," Deborah laughs, adding it's one of the things she loves about the kitchen. These guys the actual way it opens on to some dinky deck, overlooking the sprawling garden where she can often be found having a relaxing mug of coffee.
The fabulous upstairs living room is where the actual relaxing is done, however. It features a huge bay window as well as a large sash window and extremely high ceilings so it's a very bright, airy room but it's also welcoming -- the clotted-cream walls add warmth, as do the polished oak floors. The brown velvet sofa and matching armchair from Meadows and Byrne lend a classy cosiness. The black dining table and cream chairs will also be from Meadows and Byrne.
"I'm an excellent fan of theirs," says Deborah. "I think they are doing really nice design and quality."
Pictures -- there's a particularly nice painting by Carmel Mooney -- lamps and photos then add colour, but Deborah prefers to keep your room quite spare. "We work in this type of cluttered environment that I prefer simplicity during my home surroundings. Colour, too, I prefer to keep for fashion," the bubbly designer says, adding, all over again, "it's such an exciting business, I really like it."
If they are all like Deborah at the Motorola Dublin Fashion Week, the enthusiasm alone could alter their success levels dramatically .
That simply leaves the farmers and the taxi drivers. Can anything prompt an identical sea change?
Deborah Veale's fashion show (with fellow designer Aideen bodkin) will be held on top floor of Fallon Byrne, 11-17 Exchequer St, d2, on august 28 at 5.30pm.
