Bradley Wiggins revels in Tour de France win
Bradley Wiggins was on top of the world after celebrating becoming the first British Tour de France champion by leading Mark Cavendish to victory in Paris.
Wiggins completed his 13th day in the yellow jersey and the 99th Tour in first place, three minutes 21 seconds ahead of Team Sky colleague Chris Froome,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who became the second Briton,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after his team-mate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on the podium in the history of the race.
Not content with his personal success, Wiggins played an integral role as world champion Cavendish won the 120-kilometre 20th stage from Rambouillet, sealing victory on the Champs-Elysees for a fourth consecutive year.
'It's incredible. I bet I'll look back in years to come and think 'God,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that was special'.'
The final-day triumph was the seventh British stage success of the 2012 Tour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with Cavendish finishing with three wins,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Wiggins with two,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Froome with one and David Millar (Garmin-Sharp) one.
All four Britons, together with Ian Stannard, are due to combine on Saturday in a bid to help Cavendish win Olympic gold in the 250-kilometre road race on the opening day of London 2012.
Cavendish has won on the French capital's most famous boulevard in each of the Tours he has completed - in 2009, 2010,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2011 and now in 2012.
Cavendish said: 'It's incredible. It couldn't be a more perfect end to an amazing Tour for me.
'We haven't just won the yellow jersey, we got first and second.
'We (Britain) won seven stages in total - that's one out of three stages won by a British rider.
'The guys in the Olympic team have one more job to do, but it's been an incredible few weeks for us.'
It was a remarkable effort for the Manxman, who spent much of the Tour in the service of Wiggins.
Wiggins repaid the favour, taking to the front with 1.1km remaining, with Edvald Boasson Hagen assuming the lead 600 metres out.
What's next? Wiggins will represent Team GB at the Olympic Games
Cavendish came to the front in the rainbow jersey 400 metres from the line and powered to a supreme victory.
Bradley Wiggins added that 'dreams do come true' after the race.
As he addressed a crowd filled with Britons by the Champs-Elysees, Wiggins said: 'We're just going to draw the raffle numbers now.
'Thanks for the amazing support the last three weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I really appreciate it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
'It's been a magical couple of weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Some dreams do come true.
'My old mother over there, her son's just won the Tour de France.
'Thank you everyone. Cheers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Have a safe journey home and don't get too drunk.'
Time to party? Wiggins was held up by his Team Sky team-mates after his victory
Wiggins added: 'It's hard to take in as it happens. Every lap of the Champs-Elysees was goose-pimple stuff.
'We had a job to do with Mark today and we were all motivated to do that so it made it go a lot quicker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The concentration was high and for Mark to finish it off like that, well, it couldn't get any better.'
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, hopes participation numbers in cycling will explode as a result of Wiggins' victory.
'Huge congratulations must go to Bradley Wiggins,' Johnson said.
'His incredible determination,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], focus and will to win blew away the rest of the field and propelled this legendary Londoner to the summit of his sport.
'His inspirational performances,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ably supported by his fellow Team Sky riders including Brits Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish, will encourage thousands more people to take to two wheels.'
