German firm to pay Pakistan factory fire victims
Karachi: A German discount clothing retailer has decided to pay more than $1.Two million compensation for victims of a Pakistan factory fire, a union leader said on Wednesday.
The blaze in September at the Ali Enterprises factory in Karachi, which made ready-to-wear garments for Western stores, killed 289 workers and injured 110 more.
German news magazine Der Spiegel reported in its online edition on Tuesday that the Kik chain, which the factory supplied with jeans, had decided to pay an overall total of $500,000 compensation which involves less than $2,000 for each life lost.
Nasir Mansoor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], head of the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF), an area union for Pakistani factory workers, said his organisation and also the Clean Clothes Campaign,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a global group striving for better conditions for garment workers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had forced Kik to up the compensation.
"We didn't agree with the compensation they had announced. We warned them that people would seek for international justice when they didn't share responsibility and deservedly compensated the families," Mansoor said.
"Now, Kik has agreed to pay initially 500,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 euros ($650,000). They'd soon pay another half-a-million euros."
Mr Mansoor said NTUF is at talks to secure a level bigger payout for the workers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Kik agreed to compensate the victims and their families only after activists presented all of them with evidence that most of the factory's output was destined because of its Okey brand, Mr Mansoor said.
"We saw the labels about the merchandise, checked invoices and interviewed the employees to understand that a minimum of 90 % from the garments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Ali Enterprises was producing, was the Okey brand for Kik," he said.
"We contacted the organization and asked for the compensation. Initially, they declined to accept the fact, however they finally gave into the concrete evidences we'd."
The Pakistani government has paid more than 100 family members 700,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 rupees ($7,000), but many families appear at first sight still waiting for cheques, which were held up by governmental red-tape.
Of the 110 workers who have been injured,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dozens suffered disabling injuries. About 2,000 anybody else have lost their livelihood.
"Life is becoming hell since that fire," said Mohammad Khalid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 29, who worked at the factory with his elder brother Majid. Majid died and Mohammad lost his left arm in the fire.
"I have to take proper care of my brother's family too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but cannot find a job due to my disability," he explained.
His family have not yet received compensation in the government and he sees the German company's money as inadequate to provide a better life for the two families.
"We have lost both male breadwinners. This compensation won't help for very long. Our women and children will have to work hard to give all of us," he said.
