Notorious Galloway Boys street gang undergoing renewal
A fierce leader and a cache of weapons helped to make the Galloway Boys probably the most feared street gangs in Toronto,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however nowadays they pose a new threat with younger members vying to fill a leadership vacuum.

At a news conference on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Det. Sgt. Brett Nicol told reporters that police have found that the Galloway Boys are currently in conflict with a group in the Orton Park area.
But Nicol said the violence "is being fuelled by the Galloway Boys' propensity for violence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their ability to acquire guns and their willingness to find revenge."
Nicol said the members linked to the shootings in Toronto are viewed to become jostling for control within the gang.
Just before Tuesday's news conference, police had made clear that the new generation of leaders was entering play within the Galloway Boys organization.
Anthony Hutchinson, a court-certified gang expert, said the Galloway Boys name appears to originate from police, as the group has had other names on the street during its long history.
Years back, the street gang was led by Tyshan Riley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who found power after a close friend, Norris Allen, was shot dead while sitting in a parked car in October 2002.
Hutchinson said the Riley-era Galloway Boys were highly organized and involved with a number of criminal enterprises.
"The Galloway Boys unlike most other gangs over the Town of Toronto were involved in everything: crack, prostitution, arms trades, gun trades, munition trades, whatever they required to do to earn money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Hutchinson said in an interview with CBC Radio's Metro Morning.
In late 2003, the gang came into having a cache of guns they obtained through theft.
"It was because of their arsenal that they were one of the most powerful gang … in Toronto in recent years," Hutchinson said.
But despite the firepower available, law enforcement would eventually have the ability to dismantle a lot of the gang and put its leadership in jail.
Toronto Star court reporter Betsy Powell wrote a book concerning the Galloway Boys, including their lengthy feud using the Malvern Crew, a rival street gang.
She told Metro Morning captured the Galloway Boys became the focus of a police investigation following the killings that Riley was associated with.
Riley and two other Galloway Boys are each serving a life sentence for a March 2004 attack on two innocent men that were mistakenly thought to be members of a rival gang.
Last year, Riley seemed to be handed an 18-year sentence after being convicted on two counts of attempted murder, which associated with an April 2009 incident that left two other men wounded.
Opportunity knocks
When Riley was put in jail, a new opportunity exposed for potential successors.
"Once he's out of the picture, what happens is you have a large amount of up-and-comers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or kind of hangers-on to the people affiliated with [the Galloway Boys],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Hutchinson.
Without a single leader in control, Hutchinson said it is probably there is going to be competing groups vying for charge of the organization.
"That's going to be a lot more dangerous, not just for your community, however for Toronto in general," he explained.
Nicol said that some of the Galloway Boys which were locked up previously have slowly been let back out into society.
Plus some of them have helped take along the successors which have entered into their shoes.
"They were considered mentors to the young members that we're now seeking today," he said.
It remains to be seen whether Riley still holds any sway using the gang,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Riley's voice has been featured on a minumum of one rap song posted online, which includes audio from the former Galloway Boys leader talking on a telephone.
